Helen Lyon Peterson Tidball

1920-2001

We honor our mother, Helen Lyon Peterson Tidball, who was born in 1920 on the family homestead near Lemmon, South Dakota. As a young girl, she rode her horse to a one-room, rural school where she developed a passion for learning. She obtained a Master’s Degree in Education and remained steadfast to ensuring every child had access to quality public education. For over 45 years, she took an active role in furthering education in South Dakota as a teacher, principal, and county superintendent while being a mother of three children. For her contributions to education and the community, she received numerous awards. She was a role model for us and remains a loving reminder of the importance of doing the right thing even when it isn’t easy.
